I’ve been playing an instrument called ‘didgeridoo’ for some years, with varying results… 😛 For the uninitiated, the didgeridoo is “…a wind instrument developed by Indigenous Australians of northern Australia around 1,500 years ago and still in widespread usage today both in Australia and around the world. It is sometimes described as a natural wooden trumpet or ‘drone pipe’.” (Quote from ‘Wikipedia’)

I have two different didgeridoos, which are pictured on the left.

The larger one (l=150cm) is made of teak wood; it is initially quite easy to play and gives a very low, booming drone, but it is rather difficult to modulate the tone.

The smaller one (l=125cm) is made of eucalyptus wood; it is a bit harder to play, but the tone modulation is surprisingly easy.

Both are bought from Thomann, a German online music shop.

A Short History of Linux Distributions (as used by me)

I’m quite sure this post interests nobody, but…

My first contact with Linux was Red Hat 7.0. I didn’t understand it at all, but still was hooked, so when 7.2 was released, I upgraded and gradually started to understand and use Linux. 7.3 gave me some trouble (for example font anti-aliasing never did work), so I switched to Mandrake 8.2. 9.0 was released soon, and I used it for some time. Mandrake 9.2 was a disaster (buggiest Linux release I’ve ever encountered), so I re-installed 9.0 and started looking for alternatives (and I wanted to get rid of the so-called ‘dependency-hell’), finally deciding on Slackware. That venerable distribution was a real ‘Linux-high-school’ for me… I used Slackware from version 8.1 to 10.2, and even became a maintainer of some Slackware packages. Then a friend of mine introduced me to Gentoo, which I have been using since 2005 on all of my computers, be it a desktop, a laptop or a server.

Reason for sticking with Gentoo Linux? In one word: configurability 🙂

Alku On Tässä / The Start Is Here

Sillä lailla, tässä sitä nyt ollaan… ‘Mun iha enstemmäinen’ WordPress-blogi. Kyseinen WordPress-installaatio pyorii vanhan pöytäkoneeni (AMD Athlon XP 1700 GHz) osista kasatussa Gentoo Linuxin vauhdittamassa serverissä. Tämä on vasta testiajo, sivujen ulkonäkö tulee muuttumaan ajan myötä. Osa kirjoituksista tulee olemaan suomeksi, osa englanniksi; tarkoitus olisi blogata 1) Linuxista, ja erityisesti Linuxin audio-puolesta (erityisen erityisesti csoundista); 2) Mangasta, animesta ja erityisesti anime-figuureista; 3) Jostain muusta mitä nyt tulee mieleen…

Well, this is it…. My first WordPress-blog. The mentioned WordPress installation resides in a server build from my old desktop computer’s (AMD Athlon XP 1700 GHz) parts, running Gentoo Linux. This post is just a test, the appearance of the pages will change in time. Some of the writings will be in my native Finnish, some in English; I intend to blog about 1) Linux, especially linux audio (and especially especially csound); 2) Manga, anime and especially anime figures; 3) Something completely different…

And hey, If you came here searching for the csound-wii Gentoo overlay, it has been permanently moved to Gitorious: http://gitorious.org/csound-wii
